Tips For Recovering From Liposuction

By Janet Hargraves

Choosing to undergo Dallas liposuction is a big decision, and you need to make sure you consider all aspects before going through with this procedure. One of the most important phases of this surgery is the recovery time, which can last for months after going under the knife.

Right after surgery Once you are awake and no longer groggy from the medication, your nurse will encourage you to walk so that your blood will begin flowing and you will not develop a blood clot. Be prepared to be sore, so make sure you take it slow and do not walk more than you can. Recovery time varies depending on the intensity of your surgery. Some patients leave a few hours after their surgery and some require a day or two in the hospital. On the drive home, you will need to remember to wear dark clothes and have dark towels to cover your seats. Because you have a drain for blood and fluids, you will need something to cover your car?s upholstery. Your surgeon will probably also suggest that you wear compression garments after surgery to help you heal more quickly.

2-4 weeks after surgery Expect to be sore for a few weeks after surgery, but most people are able to resume their daily activities after a week. Make sure that in the first few days after surgery you take it easy; you do not want to jump back into things too quickly and cause complications. After your soreness has gone away, make sure you speak with your surgeon before you start exercising; it usually take two to four weeks for your body to be ready for that kind of activity. Some Dallas liposuction procedures require stitches. If yours does, they will fall out on their own seven to ten days after surgery. Many people also experience nerve damage, which can cause tingling or prickling. This will become less noticeable as your nerves heal themselves.

Months after surgery Although your swelling should begin to go down a few weeks after your liposuction, some people stay swollen for three to six months. Because each patient is different, there is no specific timeline for your recovery. However, if you are still experiencing swelling ten months after your surgery, you need to make an appointment with your surgeon. Also, do not be concerned if one side of your body heals faster than the other side. Asymmetrical healing is very common among patients.

If you think you may be a candidate for liposuction or would like more information, please schedule a consultation with your doctor to fully explore all the options available to you.
