Does Following a Greener Lifestyle Have to be Difficult?

By Helen Bicknell

People frequently believe that it is too difficult to adjust their lifestyle to be more eco friendly. Realistically, you can bring down your carbon footprint and help the environment by merely making a few simple changes into your life.

One way to live a simpler life would be to disconnect electric devices when they are not being used. Even when you switch something off, it continues to use small amounts of electrical energy and thus energy. While this can be tough in the beginning, once you are in a routine it will become easier and will also save you money in the long haul.

When you go to the food market and use bags to hold the things you purchased, try and make it a habit to keep the bags once they have been unpacked. The next time you go to the grocery, take them with you! This way you will be cutting down the amount of bags that you use each month which in turn will not only save you money (especially if you have to buy the bags each time) but will also mean less scrap is being generated that could likely add to pollution. Remember that you can easily use these bags to carry other items from one place to another.

If you drive less regularly, you should be able to reduce the effect of your carbon footprint. Try to walk or carpool whenever you can unless it's important that you drive to a certain location. If you drive the car infrequently you will not only be bringing down the amount of pollution produced but also saving money. This is one area where you can really save a a considerable amount of the money you spend on rising fuel prices.

While there are numerous ways to decrease pollution, one thing that immediately comes to my mind is the water bottles that are purchased in large numbers throughout the world. The water inside these bottles made of plastic may be better than tap water but they cause a considerable amount of pollution as they are usually discarded after just being used once. If you want to continue drinking bottled water then by all means go right ahead. However, try using the bottles again whenever you can. Maybe you are wondering just how. Well, with a small investment, you can buy a pretty good water filter which you can use to fill them and then you can put them in the icebox. Once again, similar to the other examples previously, this will bring down your impact on the environment as a result of less potential pollution and will also save you money.

Overall, I am certain that you can see that all these things are kind of small alterations but collectively they can contribute to make a huge difference, both making you more green and also decreasing your monthly expenses. In response to the original question, absolutely, green living can be easy if you're willing to take modest steps.
