4 Great Dog Training Tips

By Dirk Gruenberg

I'm sure that almost every pet owner would like their dog to listen to their commands. Actually this isn't an impossible task at all. All you need to know are a few basic strategies on where to start and how to go about it.

To get you started off, here are a few training tips that might help you:

1. You'd be best off, if only one person (i.e. you) train your dog in the beginning. This allows the dog to get used to your commands, without being confused by many people given commands at the same time or giving the same command in slightly different ways.

You should also give out your commands in consistent terms for your dog to remember and follow.

2. It is important for your dog to know that you are the boss. Put simply: let him know that you, and only you, are the pack leader. Keep in mind that dogs are pack animals, and they will intuitively look to their leader if in doubt.

As pack leaders are usually the ones in control of the food supply, a good way to establish yourself as the pack leader would be to always feed your dog only after you have eaten.

3. You need to use positive reinforcements. You should reward good behavior and ignore unwanted behavior. Refrain from punishing your dog for disobedience. Instead, show him that good behavior would earn him treats and praises while bad behavior will get him none. Using positive reinforcements will also strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

4. Sometimes dog training is not an easy task. You certainly have to be both persistent and consistent. Getting upset at your dog will not speed up the process. Try to stay calm and keep working at the commands patiently. Know that the process will take time and that your dog most likely will not learn the commands overnight.

Yes, it is true... dog training may not be super, super easy. But always keep in mind how much better your life -and that of your dog- will be once you have trained him properly.
