Get To know Rick Perry, Your Next President

By Scott Reynolds

Conditional upon how far into the year you are looking at this bio, you are possibly hearing about Rick Perry in dribs and drabs - or he's already stated his candidacy for the Presidency and the ether are crammed with discussions of the unique fresh candidate.

Regardless, if you would like to get up-to-speed concerning who he is and exactly where he got his start, here's an at-a-glance intro that will get you up-to-speed in a few twitches of a Texas longhorn's tail.

Early & Higher Education Days

Rick Perry came into this world March 4, 1950 in Paint Creek, Haskell Country Texas. His father Joseph Perry and mother Amelia Holt Perry were ranchers and cotton growers. His dad was an energetic Texas Democrat, commissioner of the school board in Haskell County as well as a frequent participant on the school board as well.

He graduated in 1968 from Paint Creek high school and left for Texas A&M University. Whilst attending university, he worked on and off as a publication salesperson knocking on doorways and discovering how to build relationships with people coming from all parts of society. He graduated from the Texas A&M Animal Science program in 1972.

US Military Service

Signing up for the Air Force directly from college, Rick Perry went through flight training and was sent to fly the big C-130 "Hercules" transport aeroplanes in the s, European countries plus the Middle East.

He achieved the position of Captain and departed the military services in 1977, coming back home to work the family's cotton acerage along with his father.

Romantic Relationship

When returning home from the armed service, in 1982 Perry wedded Anita Thigpen, a youth crush he'd known way back in primary school. Anita had earned a diploma in nursing from West Texas State University. They've been wed virtually three decades now.

The Political Life

Perry initiated his career in politics back in 1984 when he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives.

He was actually a Democrat - although a "Texas Democrat" - and also ran Al Gore's campaign in Texas throughout the 1988 primaries. He changed affiliation and registered with the Republican Party in 1989, announcing he had "come to his senses."

He proceeded to successfully run for Texas Agricultural Commissioner in 1990, the first office where he advocated the sale of Texas farm goods in different states and locations internationally. He won another term as Agricultural Commissioner in 1994.

Then he ran successfully for Lieutenant Governor in 1998. When George W. Bush, then Governor of Texas, resigned to take up the office of Chief Executive of the US in 2000, Perry ascended to the office of Texas Governor.

He began the first comprehensive campaign for Governor in 2002 and nailed it one more time. He ran for a second time and gained reelection in 2006. After that once more in 2010. A fiscal and cultural conservative, he is now the longest serving Governor of Texas using an excellent history of pro-business and job producing policies. The fact is that, his policies in Texas are the reason for just-about 50 % the United States job expansion over the past 10 years.
