The Correct Cure For Melasma

By Cindy Harmon

Melasma is a skin condition characterized by uneven, grayish-brown discoloration on facial areas that are frequently unprotected from the sun, such as the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Although not a life-threatening condition nearly all of the time, it cries out for cure especially as it involves more women than men.

Let's make this clear: non-prescription creams can not make melasma go away. Most women believe that beauty and whitening creams can do so. They can't. What we should do is consult a dermatologist to learn its cause and to know the proper cure.

In most Asian women, the condition results from exposure to the sun. Thus, women are suggested to frequently use an umbrella or a hat or to stay indoors when the heat of the sun is at its peak. Also, using a facial lotion with SPF 30 may protect against the harmful UV rays.

But the sun is not the only one to blame. Melasma can also be instigated by hereditary and hormonal imbalance, especially during pregnancy, which is why it is also sometimes named the "mask of pregnancy." There are also times when it is an indication of skin cancer. So no matter how trivial they seem, don't ignore the signs and see a physician first before self-treating it.

Depending on the condition, dermatologists may apply agents that are scientifically proven and medical-grade, and can lighten and subdue the melanocytes to be blamed for the skin condition. These agents may include Triluma cream, Epiquin micro lightening ointment, Cosmelan painless depigmentation peel, and intense anti-aging vitamin C serums.

Another cure is through Medlite C6 laser procedure, a well-known laser system, which, are five to ten sessions, can efficiently decrease melasma load lightly. Objective photography attests to this in patients, time and time again.

To hide this skin imperfection, women buy and apply costly make-up foundation powder on their face. This may conceal these patch discolorations in the meantime, but this does not eliminate the problem. Hiding it is also just expensive and time-consuming. To extinguish melasma permanently, it is best to consult a physician for cure.
