Why Snoring Among Children Should Not Be Neglected

By Chris Jenkins

You know that snoring is a trouble when your bed partner begins complaining. When grownups snore, not only is it going to make problems in the relationship, it may also result to tough health problems connected with lack of sleep during the night, and sleepiness during the day. The condition may be a symptom of further illness, like sleep apnea.

The self-help way to handle snoring is to sleep on one's side, fend off intake of alcohol close to bed time, and also to loosen and de-stress. If these do not make the snoring go away, then adults can see a physician for diagnosis on lifestyle connected diseases such as high blood pressure.

Even young kids snore, too. And when this happens, it can be suspected that a child is dealing with a problem in the nose or throat. Snoring results when the flow of air passes through loosened tissues in the throat. The pestering sound created is caused by the vibration of the tissues as one breathes. Sometimes, kids not only snore loudly, they also cough or gasp for their breath. If this condition persists, the child is most often left with turns of poor sleep at night, rendering him listless during the day and less engaged in school.

Apart from considering a pediatrician for potential sleep apnea among kids, you can take your kid to a nose and throat doctor, too, to check for inflamed tonsils. Also, some children are born with large tonsils and long soft palate which can narrow the airways and increase the possibility of a snore. A congested nose can also lead to snoring among children.

In some cases, nonprescription medicines can be taken to defeat the cause of snoring, otherwise, surgical procedures and long-term therapy may also be required. Children with sleep apnea may end up having attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) if not treated; this is why snoring among children should not be overlooked.
